In recent years, the manufacture of sheds for various needs in summer cottages has become a rather popular occupation. They are created not only as decorations for the yard, but also as protection from bad weather. The design of the canopies has many variations and can differ in the shape of the roof and in the location. Among this variety, it is worth paying attention to cantilever canopies, the design of which has some features. They can be purchased ready-made or built independently, which does not take much time and effort, because all materials, including drawings, are available everywhere.

Features, pros and cons

A distinctive feature of cantilever canopies is the presence of supports on one side only. This design is quite practical: it is not cumbersome, occupies a small area on the site, while fully coping with its tasks.

Such awnings have a number of advantages over other types, but they are not deprived of disadvantages either.

Advantages:

  • compactness;
  • the ability to withstand heavy loads (up to 200-250 kg per 1 m2);
  • capacity, which is determined by the size of the roof;
  • the possibility of arrival from any of the three sides;
  • saving materials / time during construction;
  • the ability to disassemble at any time.

Weaknesses:

  • lack of lateral protection from wind / precipitation;
  • lack of protection from frost in winter;
  • danger of collapse of the structure.

The cantilever canopy can be used both for round-the-clock placement of cars, and exclusively for daytime, if there is a garage near the house.

In short, this is a great way to solve problems with the placement of vehicles on the site.

What is it made of?

The structure of any carport consists of a frame and a covering. The frame is made of wood or metal and includes struts (support beams), reinforcing elements (cross beams), trusses and rafters . All elements can be purchased ready-made or made by yourself.

When choosing materials, you should be guided by some rules . The frame of the finished structure must be strong and durable, and the coating, in turn, lightweight in order to avoid increased stress on the supporting elements. This will ensure a robust design for your machine.

Wooden beams are susceptible to decay, are characterized by low strength and wear resistance. Therefore, it is recommended to use metal supports.

They must be treated in time with special agents to prevent corrosion.

Polycarbonate is used as a coating, less often corrugated board. This choice is due to the quality characteristics of the materials. Polycarbonate has a number of advantages over corrugated board:

  • translucency - partially transmits light, except for ultraviolet radiation;
  • fire resistance - melts, but does not burn;
  • insignificant sound insulation;
  • ease of cleaning - dirt is easily washed off with water;
  • a large selection of colors.

Construction process

Designing a canopy canopy is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks. This issue should be taken seriously so that the future structure can withstand heavy loads . Otherwise, in winter, it will collapse along with the snow on the car.

You should start with a drawing. It will facilitate the further work of finding materials and building a canopy with your own hands . You can make a drawing yourself or use ready-made ones if you are not ready to perform calculations or are afraid that the design will turn out to be untenable. The dimensions of the elements are variable, they must be calculated taking into account the free space on the site, the number of cars, as well as the cost of materials.

On a note! The canopy is installed in the place where the open longitudinal side will be protected from wind gusts by a fence, other buildings or tall bushes.

The construction process consists of the following steps

  1. Drill holes for racks up to 1.5 m deep, up to 30 cm in diameter.
  2. Install support beams in them and fill the holes with concrete. Usually 3-4 beams installed at a distance of 1 m from each other are enough for one car. It is also possible to use two parallel beams held together with transverse webs instead of one.
  3. Wait until the concrete hardens completely.
  4. Weld the crossbeam on top of the posts.
  5. Assemble the trusses and place them on top of the structure.
  6. Reinforce the structure from above with parallel rafters in 1 m increments.
  7. Secure the polycarbonate cover. Rafters and polycarbonate must necessarily protrude beyond the structure at the same distance (~ 10-20 cm).

Beautiful examples

Among the possible options for cantilevers, the most reliable is the combination of a metal frame with a polycarbonate coating. This design ensures the durability of the structure.

As you can see, the support beams are located at a distance of at least 1 meter from each other, in the amount of 3-4 for one car. The trusses are mounted on racks along the edges of the polycarbonate sheets.

Note! It is not recommended to install additional trusses in the middle of the sheets. The strength of the entire structure will not increase from this, and the likelihood of damage to polycarbonate in these places by strong hail will noticeably increase.

The rafters, together with the covering, extend 10-20 cm beyond the supporting structure, which ensures a more even distribution of pressure on the roof of the structure.

A canopy is installed in the yard next to the gate or in front of the garage, which eliminates the need for the owner to leave the car there every time . The design will become even more successful if the free edge is partially covered by a fence, trees, bushes, or even the wall of a house or other buildings.

Experiment with carport options for your car and remember: if these important points are observed, your "temporary shelter" will last for many years and will become a permanent location for the car.
