Today, the use of natural materials in interior design, including moss, is very popular. As a rule, for this purpose, either live moss is used, or stabilized, that is, canned.
Advantages and disadvantages
Since it is quite difficult to care for living moss in the interior, designers in their work most often choose a stabilized plant, all the liquid of which is replaced with a special solution based on glycerin.
The decorative element can be created from reindeer lichen, sphagnum, oak moss, or one that has stems or fibers.
Such a natural element is absolutely safe for the health of the inhabitants of the apartment . It is environmentally friendly and non-allergenic. Correctly carried out conservation also deprives it of its specific odor, and thanks to "freezing" one should not be afraid of the appearance of midges and bugs.
A stabilized plant is dormant, and therefore does not rot, decompose or dry out . This means that the decorative element can please the eye for about 10 years. All this time, the moss will retain a bright green hue, without turning yellow or darkening, but if desired, the plant can be painted in any color.
Canned crops do not need to be watered, and, being versatile, they are suitable for decorating any room. A relative disadvantage of this material can be called its high cost, because you will have to pay for conservation.
Live moss, as mentioned above, requires rather complicated care and does not differ in the duration of operation, but such a decorative element costs almost nothing - it is enough to find a suitable bump in the forest and bring it home.
Interior wall design
Most often, stabilized moss is used to decorate surfaces, or rather, walls. Green panels can be placed in one area as an accent, or they can be used to decorate a couple of adjacent verticals . Unusual options are obtained when stabilized greenery does not form a complete canvas, but alternates with bumps, branches, stones, pieces of wood and other natural materials.
Again, the surface can be completely filled with moss, or you can lay out inscriptions, drawings and patterns with it . In the bedroom, it will be appropriate to use vertical or horizontal stripes of moss. Such a solution will not only revive the space, but also visually enlarge it. In addition, it is customary in the room to decorate the wall at the head of the bed with greenery.
In the bathroom, the material will look good in the form of an independent panel, located away from the direct hit of drops, or as a frame for mirrors. To prevent the room from becoming like a swamp, the amount of plant used must be balanced . By the way, it is important not to fall for the tricks of non-professionals who suggest adding a stabilized moss rug to the room. This material is very delicate and easily breaks down if you press on it with wet feet.
The kitchen is an area in which surfaces often suffer from splashes of liquids, grease and food, and therefore it is not entirely reasonable to place a green canvas in it from floor to ceiling. But an interesting idea would be to draw a small drawing with a special mixture on any dry, rough surface . The idea will be realized by combining a couple of handfuls of moss, 2 glasses of kefir and the same amount of water, half a teaspoon of granulated sugar and corn syrup. The washed plant is blended with the first three ingredients, and then corn syrup is added to it until it reaches a consistency that resembles an oil paint.
In the living room, the material is suitable for decorating an accent wall . Both fuzzy layers resembling a lawn and a combination of different textures with splashes of ivy, fern and dried flowers will look great.
If you want to add volume to the composition, it is worth using stabilized bumps.
Moss as an element of decor
Without risking completely landscaping the wall, you can limit yourself to decorative moss elements.
Paintings and panels
A luxurious green canvas becomes a highlight of any room. A picture or panel can be framed (ordinary square or honeycomb-like) or left without it. As a rule, layers are taken as the basis of the composition, to which fragments of reindeer lichen, bumps, wood cuts, stones or pieces of bark are added.
By dyeing the moss in different colors, it is easy to get an original composition . Designers recommend choosing one accent shade, and keeping the rest in a muted range. Pictures assembled from several modules look curious.
If you have stabilized greenery, you can do the painting yourself . To design a standard A4 sheet of plastic or polystyrene, 100 grams of raw materials are usually enough. Pieces of moss are glued with waterproof PVA glue. You can also paint or purchase a regular painting, and then add volume to tree crowns, fields, hills, and other suitable elements.
In aquarium
Unexpectedly, but stylish looks stabilized moss, placed in a dry aquarium with dim lighting. From the material it will turn out to create voluminous compositions - for example, a rural landscape with a stream, forest and fields.
In furniture
Furniture, for the decoration of which moss is chosen, does not differ in practicality, but it looks very impressive. For instance, Interspersed with reindeer lichen can be used to treat armrests of chairs or coffee tables, the surface of which is protected by glass.
Clock
Moss watches are also popular. In fact, they look like a large eco-painting, but with a clockwork: hands and a dial. Such a device works on batteries and can have a different shape - a circle, a square, a heart or a semi-oval . If desired, the canned greenery composition can be enclosed in a wooden frame.
It is worth adding that such a watch is quite easy to make yourself . First, a base of the desired shape is formed from plastic or wood, and then a mechanism with arrows is mounted on it. Pieces of moss are fixed on the surface with PVA glue.
It is even easier to buy a regular watch and glue it over with stabilized reindeer moss.
Lettering
Plants are also suitable for the formation of short volumetric inscriptions.
To make a decorative element yourself, you can prepare a base, and then, using double-sided tape, cover it with green pieces of a suitable size.
There is also a more complex option:
- first, three handfuls of moss, a glass of kefir, 2 tablespoons of soaked hydrogel and a couple of teaspoons of granulated sugar are mixed in a blender;
- then a brush is dipped into the composition, and the paste is neatly distributed over the sketch.
Care rules
Since experts recommend using stabilized moss in the interior, we will talk about caring for this variety
- The correct choice of the location of the element in the apartment plays an important role. Moss reacts poorly to low temperatures, and also does not tolerate direct sunlight.
- He cannot be watered, sprayed and fed, but he loves high humidity - the green panel will “feel” well even in the bathroom. By the way, the ideal humidity is approximately 40-70%.
- If the air dries up in the apartment in winter from working batteries, then you should think about a humidifier.
- Natural decor usually does not attract dust, but if it does appear, then it will be enough to treat the surface with a broom with soft fibers.
Interior options with stabilized moss
If it were not for the green panel on the wall, the living room in white would look very boring . The composition of a rather large size is enclosed in a laconic white frame and illuminated by several lamps. The moss itself on the panel is combined with other natural elements. A snow-white classic sofa, light walls and light gray interior details become the perfect backdrop for an unusual decorative element.
The modular panel located at the head of the bed looks very advantageous . The composition is assembled from 9 green squares in wooden frames, arranged in rows of 3. The panel echoes with a bright green carpet and other decorative elements. Wood paneling on the walls in combination with moss creates a cozy “forest” atmosphere in the room.
An austere living room in black and gray tones will sparkle with new colors if you place a coffee table with vegetation under glass in it . Successfully harmonizing with some of the existing decor, it is this item that gives the room a liveliness.
Another interesting option would be to add a moss wall in the bedroom next to the bed . This solution makes it possible to visually delimit the room and create a separate zone. A comfortable yellow armchair next to it, a few light fixtures and a wooden console suggest that this is a place for reading.
