For a long time there have been materials for the manufacture of which woodworking waste is used. Sheets of plywood, fiberboard, chipboard are especially popular among consumers. However, not so long ago, OSB boards appeared on the market, the characteristics of which are many times superior to existing analogues.
Why know the mass?
OSB is an oriented strand board. It is made from a mixture of coniferous and deciduous tree shavings, treated with resin and other impregnations. During production, the chips are placed in three layers, due to which high strength and durability of the structure is achieved during operation.
OSB plates are in demand in construction. They are used for:
- erection of partitions;
- floor installation;
- wall and roof decoration;
- cladding and cladding.
Elastic and resilient, OSB sheets ensure the stability of the structure being erected, capable of handling heavy loads. Manufacturers produce slabs of different thicknesses, which allows you to adjust the amount of load without changing the shape of the product.
All particle boards can be divided into several types
- OSB-1 … Used for rough finishing, packaging or furniture assembly. They are installed in rooms with low humidity.
- OSB-2 … Designed for the construction of load-bearing structures inside premises with a low level of humidity.
- OSB-3 … They are used for the construction of load-bearing walls, partitions and other structures in rooms with high humidity levels.
- OSB-4 … The toughest slabs that can withstand moisture. They are used to assemble structures that carry heavy loads.
The stronger the board, the thicker it is, and the greater its weight. Therefore, it is so important to determine the weight parameters of each sheet in order to be able to calculate what kind of load the product can withstand. Standard OSB-3 boards are more popular in construction.
Regardless of thickness and weight, the boards have the following advantages
- Compact dimensions … The sheets are made so that they can be used for a variety of applications. For example, for the assembly of frame houses, sheets with dimensions of 1, 22x2, 44 m are used. This format will allow covering 2 spans of racks. As a result, a cell is formed, the width of which will be 56 cm. Subsequently, it will be convenient to fill the formed cell with insulation material.
- Convenience of processing … OSB boards are assembled from shavings, which are then held together with resins and other adhesives. As a result, the sheets become easy to cut during operation. Both electric and hand tools can be used for sawing. At the same time, the cut turns out to be smooth, there are no cracks or chips on it.
-
High strength and rigidity … The structure of oriented strand boards is designed for heavy loads from both other elements and fasteners. In terms of strength, OSB is not inferior to solid board, so both materials are often used together.
- Smooth and smooth surface . The sheets do not need to be subjected to additional processing during use. It is enough to install the stove, after which it will be possible to immediately start finishing it.
- Availability … OSB sheet is an inexpensive building material. The average price per square meter is 150 rubles.
Finally, the main advantage of OSB boards is their low weight. A standard 9 mm sheet weighs up to 18 kg, so it is easy to transport and lift. The mass of OSB material needs to be known in order to determine:
- number of plates;
- final cost;
-
appointment.
For example, for cladding facades or floors, lightweight slabs of small thickness will be required. If you plan to use lumber for the construction of load-bearing structures, then preference should be given to more massive products.
Weight calculation is based on specific gravity. The standard figure is 616 kg / m3. Using this parameter, it is possible to determine the weight of both one sheet and the structure assembled from slabs as a whole.
What affects weight?
First of all, the weight of OSB sheets depends on their thickness. This is explained by the amount of shavings and resin that is used to produce the finished product. The more involved in the manufacture of wood-based materials, the greater the mass of the final structure.
And also some factors can affect weight. Let's consider them in more detail.
- Manufacturer … Some companies use their own technologies for the production of OSB sheets, so the weight of the products of private enterprises may slightly differ from the standard indicators.
- Sheet class … Depending on the modification of the material, not only its thickness is determined, but also its mass.
- Dimensions (edit) … They also affect the weight of the leaf. Smaller material will be lighter compared to a large slab.
The mass of the OSB is an indicator that can vary depending on different parameters. Taking them into account will allow you to determine the weight of the slab, calculate the required volume and cost of the material.
How much do different OSB sheets weigh?
Manufacturers produce different OSB boards, the purpose of which is determined by thickness, dimensions and, of course, weight. Therefore, there is a special table in which the weight characteristics of the available modifications of OSB boards are presented.
Consider the parameters of the standard types of manufactured particle sheets
- OSB-1 … Weight depends on the thickness of the product. For slabs with a thickness of 8 mm, the weight is 16.6 kg. If the thickness of the slab is 9 mm, the weight will be 18.4 kg, and the thickness of 10 mm will be 20.6 kg.
- OSB-2 … The weight parameter is also determined by the thickness of the manufactured products. With a thickness of 12 mm, the weight will be 24.1 kg; 15 mm - 30 kg.
- OSB-3 . The same. Thickness - 18 mm, weight - 35.3 kg; 22 mm - 43.1 kg; 25 mm - 48.8 kg.
The thickest and heaviest slabs are included in the OSB-4 category. Their weight reaches 70 kg. The mass of the OSB sheet allows you to determine the purpose of the product, as well as its cost. When calculating the required volume of material, the parameters of 1 sheet or panel are first taken into account, and only then the calculated result is multiplied by the total amount.
When choosing sheet materials, pay special attention to the weight of the product, since its further operation depends on it.
