Various types of lumber are used for the manufacture of furniture. The cost of purchased furniture depends on this. The choice of wood species determines the duration of the operation of wooden products, including boards.

Description and purpose

Strict requirements are imposed on all materials used for the manufacture of furniture; their quality and safety for the environment and human health are carefully monitored. Furniture boards have a lot of advantages, first of all, this type of material should be of high quality . For example, for cabinets, materials are used that have a certain moisture content and dimensions.

Bars, from which, among other things, furniture boards are made, most often have a rectangular shape and much less often - a square one. In the course of its production, the bars are glued together into a single whole, which gives the product increased strength and rigidity.

Such material perfectly tolerates the adverse effects of the environment.

The size of the furniture boards produced is determined by the accepted standards, but the customer can order a panel structure made of boards with the properties and dimensions he needs .… The properties and quality of the manufactured product are influenced by the level of production equipment. The more modern the machines installed in the workshops, the higher the level of their products will be. And this means that the choice of a board manufacturer is not the least important.

Furniture boards compare favorably with other products of the woodworking industry going into the production of furniture. This material has only its inherent features.

  1. In the boards, the glued bars are arranged in a certain order, and it determines the strength of the material and the duration of the furniture made from such a board. The width of the material varies depending on its purpose and varies from 1 to 6 cm. As a result, the cost of furniture made of glued boards turns out to be less than its counterparts from a solid board.
  2. Conifers are most often used for production, in some cases birch and oak. But in this case, the cost of the boards increases several times at once - materials made of hardwood are more expensive and more difficult to assemble. The outer side in this case has a more attractive appearance, thanks to careful processing and the application of several layers of varnish. The result is a matte furniture board, from which very beautiful products are made. Furniture made of such materials is resistant to dirt, and if dirt gets on the surface, it can be easily removed.
  3. The material is reliably protected from deformation. Changes in its structure, under the influence of unfavorable factors, practically do not occur.

A standard board is 20 to 60 cm wide and 60 to 270 cm long. These sizes fully cover the needs of furniture production, both public and private.

With a properly developed technology, there is practically no waste from the product after cutting.

Certain types of products are used for the production of various types of furniture

  1. Birch materials are most often used in the production of garden furniture.
  2. Pine furniture boards are considered universal and are used for the production of a wide variety of furniture. They feel great both indoors and outdoors.
  3. Spruce is a kind of material due to the large number of knots. At the same time, it is easy to process and has a low weight, which makes it possible to create light and beautiful furniture when using such products.
  4. Oak boards are the most durable, difficulties with their processing arise at the moment when it is required, for example, to drill a hole in them.

Species overview

Well-processed dry wood is used for the production of furniture boards. There are a lot of criteria by which the classification of furniture boards by types is carried out. In addition to the types of wood, the division is also used by the type of their finishing:

  • veneered;
  • laminated.

Graduation - by class:

  • "C" - the lowest-grade furniture board, has many different defects;
  • "B" - a type with minor defects;
  • "A" - different areas may slightly differ in the structure and color of the wood.
  • 0 - the highest quality option (there are no defects at all, the joints are carefully hidden).

For the production of expensive luxury furniture you will need boards of the "extra" type.

For convenience, wooden boards are, in some cases, divided by color . For example, white furniture board is made from pine and maple. Lacquered wood is always in demand in the production of floors. Usually, wide boards are taken, which have a glossy surface. The floors assembled from furniture boards are durable, but very demanding, because without careful maintenance they will quickly lose their presentation.

When choosing, you should pay attention

  1. On what class the product belongs to.
  2. How the connection was created. If it happened with glue, the quality of the joints should be assessed.
  3. At the cost. This parameter is important, but it should not be determinative. Quality furniture is made from beech, oak, birch. If the price of the material is low, then most likely we are talking about pine. The most popular are boards belonging to the middle price category. They are made from maple, cherry and alder.
  4. For uniformity. The appearance of a product made of heterogeneous materials will always be unattractive. Such furniture boards are second-rate.
  5. For the purpose of the products that you plan to use. If it is necessary to make a window sill, a door, a simpler material is taken. Expensive material options, for example, beech, are produced only to order and in small batches.

Storage features

There are several parameters that you need to pay attention to during storage

  1. Humidity. It should not be high or, on the contrary, low. The optimal indicator for this material is in the region of 30-60 percent.
  2. With long storage periods, the surface is treated with varnishes and paints, since it is difficult to predict what effect the material will be exposed to during a long stay in warehouses.
  3. Boards must not be stored in unheated and damp rooms. During the season, the tree will be saturated with moisture, as a result, its condition will deteriorate significantly.
  4. Do not place other heavy materials on the products, as constant pressure can cause deformation.

How to use it correctly?

Almost any furniture can be made from this type of material. When creating furniture and other products, boards can first be made, which are then fastened together and, if necessary, processed.

Recently, various joining methods have been used, both with the use of standard types of fasteners and adhesives . With the mechanical method of connecting the bars, they resort to using self-tapping screws. If they are screwed in, then their diameter must be at least 10% of the product width. When screwed into the end - not less than 5% of the board width. It is unacceptable to use nails in the production process, as they damage furniture boards.

When creating furniture, one should take into account the peculiarities of the boards, namely, that increased loads should pass along the fibers during operation.

Before starting work, it is necessary to remove boards with visible defects and deformations in order not to reduce the quality of the furniture produced.
