One of the biggest problems of city apartments built in Soviet times is their small size. Small rooms, a small entrance hall and a scanty kitchen. Therefore, many housewives, when renovating, decide to combine the kitchen and living room. And the owners of apartments in modern new buildings, on the contrary, receive a large, already combined kitchen and living room space upon purchase. They all want to properly design such a space and competently divide it into zones with different functionality, as well as choose ceiling coverings so that they harmoniously blend into the overall style of room decoration.

Types of ceilings

Renovation of premises begins from the ceiling. Here, different options are possible: you can simply whitewash, paint, wallpaper, or, if finances allow you, splurge on more complex designs made of innovative materials. It all depends on the height of the ceiling above the floor and the general style of the room. For rooms with low ceilings, you can choose an option based on the developments of the last century and your own capabilities and preferences.

Whitewashed ceilings used to be in every apartment and do not require large financial costs or special skills. Whitewash is used as a coating, which is an absolutely environmentally friendly material. If you want colors in the interior, just add the color of the desired shade to the solution. This option is not a fashion trend, but it is ideal for rooms with low ceilings. The only drawback of such a whitewashed coating is its fragility. After all, they cook a lot in the kitchen, there is a gas stove and therefore all coatings not only "absorb" odors, but also get dirty. Therefore, from time to time you have to whitewash the ceiling over and over again.

Paint coating also does not apply to complex and expensive finishes. Before painting, you need to level the surface of the ceiling using special building mixtures so that the paint lies in an even layer. Water-based paints are used for coating: they are not too expensive, not very dangerous and easy to use. Stores provide a wide variety of colors for these materials. It is easy to clean the painted ceilings of dust, but it will not be possible to get rid of the stains on them, so you will have to repeat the staining procedure again.

Pasting the ceiling with wallpaper also suitable for kitchens-living rooms with low ceilings. In hardware stores, you can find different options for non-woven ceiling wallpaper, including for further painting. But it will take longer to tinker with such a ceiling, and there will be more cash costs. Pasting the walls is much easier than pasting the ceiling: firstly, the surface of the ceiling for pasting must be perfectly flat, otherwise it will not be possible to join the drawing and make the seams invisible, and secondly, one person cannot glue the ceilings, so you have to call for help friends who are familiar with this type of work, or hire specialists. In addition to the disadvantages described, there are also disadvantages - the wallpaper perfectly "absorbs" all kitchen odors and dirt and does not like high humidity.

In rooms with high ceilings, you can also use the above-described finishing methods, as well as consider more modern solutions. Drywall covering is a hinged one. It provides ample opportunities for the implementation of any design ideas. There are many advantages in such design options:

  • hinged structures will help hide any roughness, irregularities, and at the same time electrical wiring or air ducts;
  • drywall structures are lightweight, but very strong and durable;
  • drywall will help create multi-level spaces on the ceiling, which helps zoning the room and additionally visually increases the height of the ceilings;
  • maintenance of suspended structures will not be difficult;
  • drywall is suitable for whitewashing or subsequent painting.

Suspended ceilings made of plasterboard in combination with various lamps will emphasize the originality of the interior of your kitchen-dining room. Naturally, this design option will cost significantly more than whitewashing, painting and wallpapering, but you are not doing repairs for one day. There are other benefits as well.

Stretch ceilings are one of the modern ways of interior decoration. They look great. They, like plasterboard coatings, are suspended. The basis of such coatings is a special PVC film, which is stretched using a special gun, hot or cold. This film has many color options and three surface texture options (glossy, matte, satin). There are many advantages to using them.

  • Allows you to create multi-level spaces on the ceiling, helping to focus on different areas of the kitchen-living room.
  • Stretch ceilings will save you from unexpected "floods" from neighbors from above, as the film is very durable and does not absorb water.
  • All engineering structures of the house (electrical cables, pipes) can be easily hidden behind such surfaces.
  • They are durable and do not lose their beautiful appearance.
  • Their surfaces are easy to clean if they get dirty, remembering that sharp objects should not be used when cleaning.

Stretch ceilings will be seamless if the length of the ceiling does not exceed 5.5 m. If more, then the joining of the canvases is inevitable. Of course, this design option is the most expensive, and for its installation you will have to spend a lot of time and hire specialists, but in the end you get a perfectly flat and beautifully decorated ceiling.

Combinations of plasterboard and tension surfaces are possible if you have a combined kitchen-living room.

Design options

When planning the design of the ceiling in the kitchen-living room, it is important to take into account all the features of the room, the style of decoration and the personal wishes of family members. Simple rules will determine your choice.

  • If the kitchen is very small, it can be decorated in dark colors. Dark ceilings are more practical because they are the least noticeable of dirt. In addition, in some cases it will help to visually increase the depth of the space.
  • You should not use dark colors in rooms that are poorly lit, and vice versa, light colors in cases where the room is well lit.
  • Colored ceilings will help to make a bright accent on one of the areas of the kitchen-living room. But at the same time, one should not forget that not every color combination is appropriate for use.
  • Do not forget that each color carries its own emotional load: green calms, blue relieves muscle tension, orange invigorates. White, blue or yellow colors increase the space. Orange and brown, on the other hand, will narrow it down. When using blue, do not forget that it can visually reduce the height of the ceilings. Using this, you can apply brighter and more cheerful colors in the kitchen, and decorate the living room in more restrained pastel colors.

  • In the living room, warm colors are appropriate in the design. In the kitchen, you can use cold tones, since it is already quite hot there from the stove.
  • Choose the color of the ceiling covering to match the wall decoration only when you want to increase the space of the room.
  • For the ceilings in the cooking area, you can choose glossy surface options, and for the living room, on the contrary, matte. This combination will competently divide the space into parts.
  • Plasterboard level suspended structures in combination with stretch ceilings will create a smooth transition between two rooms. Correctly selected lighting of different levels will create a feeling of lightness.
  • Stretch ceilings with images of the blue sky and tree crowns will look very beautiful in the living room area. Thus, those present will have the feeling that they are in nature. LED lighting around the perimeter or inside the stretch surface will create the feeling of diffused sunlight.
  • In classic-style rooms with low ceilings, whitewashed surfaces in combination with decorative stucco elements will look very good.

For reflection . Having made the decision to combine the kitchen and living room into a single whole, you must remember that this option brings you not only gain in space, but also brings additional problems. If you cook a lot and often, then all the smells and impurities from the kitchen area instantly enter the living room, which means that you will have more cleaning. Very powerful ventilation systems with replaceable filters must be installed above the stove.

Zoning and lighting

The combination of the kitchen and living room into a single space will entail some changes in the layout of the walls. Important! Remember that any redevelopment of an apartment requires a special permit. Self-demolition of load-bearing retaining walls can seriously compromise the strength of the structure and the safety of all residents in the house.

The division of space into zones can be achieved in different ways

  • Plasterboard wall or columns.
  • With the help of multilevel ceilings or with the use of different textures of the surfaces of ceiling coverings.
  • Different textured floor surfaces are also able to cope with the task of dividing space.
  • Furniture items can be used for zoning a room.
  • Zoning using lighting devices.

Sometimes, instead of demolishing the walls, it is enough to expand the doorway, making a wide arched space of any shape. Instead of arches and walls, you can use small columns, which not only divide the space, but also carry the semantic load in a classic-style room. Zoning space with lamps is the most interesting design option.

  • Central lighting is provided by a chandelier located in the center of the room. It is usually complemented by floor or wall lamps of various designs.
  • Lighting can be spot. In this case, the luminaires are arranged in small groups to illuminate certain places.
  • Contour lighting helps to emphasize different levels of space, hide seams and visually increase the height of ceilings. It looks especially impressive.
  • Raster lighting, using luminaires in reflectors, is done only in places where there are high ceilings.
Image
Image

Naturally, different combinations of all types of lighting can be used. For glossy surfaces, small spotlights are more suitable, and for the living room it is better to choose a large chandelier that will be located above the table. If the surface of the ceiling is shiny, you shouldn't use a lot of high power lighting fixtures. This will create a light overload in the room.

Image
Image

It should be noted right away that any lamp generates heat. This means that not every luminaire is suitable for tensioning surfaces, as the PVC film can deteriorate when heated. In this case, it is better to use lighting fixtures with energy-saving lamps or LED backlighting.

Image
Image

Stretch ceilings cannot be combined with heavy chandeliers, which simply cannot be attached to a stretched surface . For small luminaires, mounts are equipped before stretching the ceiling, having previously made technological cutouts in films for them.

Plasterboard constructions are combined with any types of fixtures, but built-in ones look the most impressive.
