Washing machine drain is a function without which washing the laundry is impossible. A properly implemented drain channel - a drain pipe of the desired slope, diameter and length - will somewhat speed up the washing process and extend the life of the washing machine.

Features and connection principle

The water drain of the automatic washing machine (CMA) is discharged into the sewer (or into a septic tank at a summer cottage) . For this, a pipe or corrugation of circular cross-section of a smaller diameter is used, connected either directly to a common sewer pipe using a tee, or through a siphon (elbow) under the sink, which protects the air in the room from odor from the drain line.

The drain line of the washing machine is located below the inlet (water supply) line - this allows the suction and exhaust pumps to spend less energy on drawing fresh and draining waste water - and also to work longer without breakdowns.

Requirements

So that your SMA will serve 10 or more years without breakdowns, observe the mandatory requirements for its connection.

  1. The length of the drain pipe or corrugation is no more than 2 m . A larger column of water, even an inclined one, will make it harder for the pump to push, and it will quickly fail.
  2. Do not "lift" the drain pipe vertically upwards by a meter or more . This is especially true for sinks installed at a height for people with a height of 1, 9-2 m, in which the drain hose hangs right in and is tied - and does not go into the same drain elbow under it.
  3. If the washing machine is located under the sink, the second one must be large enough in terms of the occupied area to cover the entire AGR from above . Splashing water will cause the droplets to land on the front panel electronic controls, which are partially facing up. The penetration of moisture into the technological slots, if the machine does not have moisture-proof inserts in place of buttons and a multi-position switch (or regulator), oxidizes current-carrying contacts. The buttons are poorly pressed, and the switch loses contact, does not select the desired program. A conductive medium (water with alkali from soap and washing powder) can close the tracks of the board and the pins of the microcircuits. In the end, the entire control board fails.
  4. Do not use materials of questionable quality . A drain (or inlet) hose that is leaky from the outside will not prevent any of the best electronic protection from leaking. The machine, of course, will stop working, the electronics and mechanics will remain in good order - but flooding the floor cannot be prevented when no one is around.
  5. The distance from the floor to the sewer drain (where the drain hose is connected to the pipe) is no more than 60 cm .
  6. The socket must not be located below 70 cm from the floor - it always hangs above the drain connection. Place it away from the sink, in the driest place.

Variants and methods

The CMA drain channel is connected by any of four methods: via a siphon (under the sink), through plumbing (for example, to a toilet bowl drain), horizontally or directly. Regardless of which of the options applies, it will ensure the removal of two sources of wastewater into one common drainage channel.

Through a siphon

The siphon, or knee, is endowed with an important function - by closing it with standing waste water, it isolates the kitchen or bathroom from odors from the sewer. Modern siphons are already equipped with a side pipe to which drains from washing machines and dishwashers are connected.

If you got an old or cheap siphon that does not have a side pipe, replace it with the one you need . A sink that has a small cabinet or a decorative ceramic support may not allow connecting the CMA through a siphon - there is no free space for connecting the washing machine to drain. A small washstand will also not allow you to mount additional pipes - there will not be enough free space under it. The disadvantage of the SMA siphon drain is the gurgling of waste water when the machine is running.

To connect the drain through the siphon, the plug is removed from the latter. A layer of sealant or silicone glue is applied to the branch pipe at the connection point. The drain hose (or corrugation) is put on. At the junction, a worm-type clamp is placed and tightened.

Direct connection

Direct connection is made using a tee or a tie-in . One (straight) branch of the tee is occupied by the sink, toilet, bathtub or shower, the second (corner) - by the drain channel of the washing machine. The side outlet, to which the SMA drain is connected, is not located at a right angle, but raised up - in case the seal is not at hand.

The tie-in is carried out directly in the pipe, to which it is impossible to pick up a tee (for example, it is asbestos or cast iron). If we are talking about an apartment building, and even on one of the lower floors of the building - it is recommended to shut off the water supply on this line in your entrance . The tie-in, as well as the outlet from the riser, is performed only during the overhaul of the apartment.

To connect the drain hose or pipe with a tee, a rubber cuff or a homemade rubber gasket cut from old car cameras is used.

The fact is that drain hoses and tees at the point of their connection differ significantly in diameter. Without a gasket or cuff, wastewater will fall outside - the CMA drain pump creates a significant pressure head.

Through the plumbing

To connect the drainage of the CMA through the plumbing means to ensure the removal of laundry waste (wastewater) directly into the bathtub, sink or toilet, and not bypassing, as with other methods. This requires frequent washing after a series of washings . Decomposing waste that has covered the surface of a bathtub or sink with a film gives off an unpleasant odor and spoils the appearance of plumbing.

To ensure that the drain hose is securely attached to the bathtub or sink, use a hanger attached to a faucet or other butt joints on which it is hung … For example, on the sink, the hose is suspended from the base of the faucet.

A weak connection may break off when the CMA removes the spent detergent solution before rinsing. The wastewater pump does not run smoothly, the hose will twitch - and may come off . If this happened, and more than one bucket of water poured out, then insufficient waterproofing of interfloor ceilings and not quite high-quality tiles (or tiles) will lead to leaks from neighbors from below, even in the bathroom, which is considered the safest room in terms of leakage.

A small sink may overflow with waste water. The fact is that washing equipment is developing, the operating time is decreasing. Water should be filled in - and pumped out after washing - as quickly as possible. Overflow is the lot of sinks and shower trays in which the siphon is clogged with fatty deposits. The water does not drain into them - it seeps out.

When washing, you will not be able to fully wash or go to the toilet. The water pumped out and flowing out of the tap (or tank) may eventually exceed the capacity of the general drain.

Horizontal bend

This is a long section of the drain hose located horizontally, often lying on the floor near the wall. An unpleasant smell from the sewer in the washing machine is provided . So that this smell does not spoil the laundry that you did not take out in time after washing, the hose is lifted and hung on the wall using any fastener (except for through) at least 15-20 cm. You can place a knee in any place - an S-shaped bend, in which standing water isolates the MCA from the smell from the sewer.

It is even better when a riser or "podium" is equipped for the SMA at the same height - the pumping out pump will work without unnecessary efforts, and the bend can be located next to the machine . The hose is positioned so that its space before the bend is not filled with waste water. In this case, the length of the drain hose or pipe can be almost any.

In some cases, a separate water seal is installed near the main sewer pipe - instead of an S-shaped bend. The dimensions of the pipes at the joints are adjusted to each other using rubber, silicone or sealant in order to seal.

Tools and accessories

As parts for the drain line, you may need:

  • splitter (tee),
  • double (it can be a water seal),
  • connectors,
  • coupling and branch pipes,
  • other adapters.

At the same time, the plug from the siphon is removed - a hose is installed in its place . As an extension - a segment of the same or slightly larger diameter. Often, an extension hose is required when a washing machine in the kitchen drains waste water into the toilet drain pipe - and it is not possible to put a new siphon under the sink at the moment. A gasket, or a ready-made collar, is used to connect a CMA drain pipe with a smaller outer diameter to a tee, whose outlet has a noticeably larger inner diameter. As fasteners - self-tapping screws and dowels (in the case of hanging the drain hose), clamps (or mounting) for the pipe.

Adjustable and ring wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers are most often used as tools. When the line needs to be extended so much that the pipe is led into an adjacent room - or led through it - you will need:

  • hammer drill with core drill of the required diameter and conventional drills,
  • extension cord (if the cord of the drill does not reach the nearest outlet),
  • a hammer,
  • screwdriver with a set of "cross" bits.

Parts, tools and consumables are selected based on the complexity of the work.

Drain hose installation rules

Make sure you raise the hose (or pipe) to the correct height. According to the scheme, it should not be located too low or too high: the laws of physics apply here too. Make the best use of every feature of the canal, the goal is to extend the life of the machine.

Check that all connections are made of good quality, the pipe hangers are securely fastened.

If the hose does not go down along its entire length, then it cannot be extended to more than 2 meters . This elongation will place a high load on the pump.

After finishing the installation, carry out a test wash. Make sure that no water leaks anywhere - as soon as the first drain follows.

A practical guide

It is impossible to connect the washing machine to the drain line without a sewage system in an urban environment. But in suburban settlements, where there is no network sewerage system and is not expected, a septic tank may be the place of discharge. If you wash the laundry with crushed laundry soap, then it is possible to drain it to an arbitrary place on your territory.

Khozmylo is a much more environmentally friendly product than washing powder . But you shouldn't abuse it. In addition, the inspection organizations do not recognize the house as residential and suitable for registration, in which all the proper engineering communications are not arranged, including an individual sewerage system with a septic tank. Therefore, connecting an SMA without sewerage is a big question whether it is worth bringing the drain outside the sewerage . Laws prohibit the supply of waste water and the disposal of waste detergents and washing powder anywhere.

Any connection to the drain of the washing machine comes down to several steps

  1. Cut the required amount of corrugation , pipe or hose drawn to a common drain pipe.
  2. Replace the siphon under the sink or bathtub (if you are using a siphon). Alternatively, tap a twin or smaller pipe into the main drain pipe.
  3. Hang on the wall and position the drain pipe so that so that wastewater disposal is an easy and fast process for SMA.
  4. Securely connect the ends of the pipe to the siphon (or water seal), the CMA drain and the main drain . Do not forget to adjust the required gaskets before connecting.

After completing the installation, check all connections for leaks. If there is a leak, fix the connection where it originated. Correctly installing the drain pipe means ensuring that the drain will never let you down for many years. Restart the machine.

Possible problems

If the SMA leaks (and floods the floor), then, in addition to unreliable connections of pipes, nozzles and an adapter, the reason lies in the fact that a leak could occur in the tank of the machine itself. This often happens when SMA has not been used for several years. Disassemble the car and follow the trail left by the water, find the place where the tank is punctured. The tank of the device will need to be replaced.

The CMA drain or filler valve is damaged, its fittings are faulty . Check their correct operation, if they work at all. Both valves may not open, for example, due to damage to the return springs, diaphragms (or dampers), burned-out coils of electromagnets that attract armatures with dampers. The user can carry out diagnostics and replacement of valves by himself. The valves are completely replaceable - they are non-separable. Defective coils are "ringed" for integrity with a multimeter.

Drainage does not take place. Check if

  • whether foreign objects (coins, buttons, balls, etc.) have fallen into the drain pipe;
  • whether the machine has taken in water, whether the washing process has started, is the machine ready to drain the waste water;
  • Are loose connections disconnected?
  • whether the water valve is open, which in the event of an emergency shuts off the water supply.

In the event of a malfunction of the tank level gauge (level sensor), the machine can fill up a full compartment, exceeding the maximum level of the tank, and wash the laundry completely immersed in water. When such an amount of water is drained, a strong pressure is formed that can quickly overfill a small sink due to the insufficient capacity of the siphon.

Image

If the cause is found (by elimination) and eliminated, the waste water outlet is unblocked, then the drain line will work normally, without leakage and inhibition of the washing cycle of the CMA itself.
