Citrus plants have become habitual “inhabitants” in the homes of many Russians. The desire to grow exotic arises in many, but only a few manage to achieve a positive result.

The most common mistake is with feeding. What you need to know about citrus supplementation?

Signs of a lack of nutrition

Any plant, just like a person, needs good nutrition.

If it is of high quality, timely and balanced, then the culture will steadily increase the green mass, produce flowers, form buds from them, and will be able to resist diseases.

Citrus crops are highly sensitive to nutritional deficiencies. You can find out about this by external signs:

  • pale shade of the crown;
  • stretching shoots;
  • loss of leaves;
  • covering leaf plates with dark spots;
  • curled edges on the leaves;
  • lack of buds or their death at an early stage.

If you look closely at the plants, then by external signs you can determine the lack of a particular substance:

  • excessive severity of veins on the leaves occurs when there is insufficient manganese and iron;
  • with changes in the color of the leaves, we can talk about a lack of sulfur;
  • dullness of leaves and curling of the edge will indicate a low amount of potassium or boron;
  • withered upper leaves, irregular leaf shape and rapid dying off of young shoots indicate a low copper content in the soil;
  • staining of fruits, loss of color brightness and further shedding are the main signs of fluorosis, which arises from a lack of iron.

If at least one of these signs is identified, you need to feed the plant without undue delay. If you run the situation, the plant may die.

Terms and rates of application

Despite the capriciousness of citrus plants and demanding nutrition, everyone will be able to cope with this science. The frequency of top dressing and the rate of fertilization play an important role. The following rules apply here:

  1. With the arrival of summer, it is necessary to apply fertilizers for citrus fruits, which are aimed at increasing the sugar level in the fruits. After such dressings, citrus fruits lose their bitterness, which is one of the main features of exotic plants grown at home. Every 10 days can be fed with nitrogen and potassium, and every 4 days fertilized with slurry and superphosphate.
  2. With an increase in the frequency of transplants and an increase in the age of the culture, the need for additional nutrition increases.
  3. After transplantation, the introduction of nutrients can be carried out after 1, 5 months. Fertilizers for flowering plants can be used. In the absence of flowers, organic is used (three doses every two weeks). Extraction of horse manure, humus or ready-made vermicompost is often used. The substrate cannot be oversaturated with minerals and organic matter, as its acidity will increase.
  4. In the cold season, the need for additional nutrition for exotics is significantly reduced, so they can be fed no more than once a month. Better yet, do a minimal top dressing every 2 months.
  5. With the onset of March, the amount of fertilizer should gradually increase, and the frequency of their application should be reduced.

How to deposit?

Top dressing is carried out in accordance with some rules, the observance of which will save the plant from possible negative consequences

  1. Fertilizers at home should only be applied with water. This can be spraying (fertilizing on the leaf) or watering (root dressing) - there are no other options. The best option is a combination of the two.
  2. Top dressing can only be carried out for healthy plants. Otherwise, the diseased culture will further weaken the immune system and it will be difficult for him to resist the disease.
  3. Mineral dressings and organic matter for indoor plants cannot be applied at the same time, since the root system will receive a chemical burn. This rule does not apply to finished compound fertilizers.

Fertilizing citrus fruits is described in the next video.
