A wood chip cutter is a useful device in a country house, a home garden, that chops tree branches cut down, for example, after a November pruning. It allows you to forget about burning sawn branches, tops, roots, cuttings of boards and sawn timber.

Design features

With the help of a wood chip cutter, it becomes possible to quickly and high-quality distill plant residues, including lignified materials, into chips. The resulting material is the most important component of compost or fuel for solid fuel boilers . The device solves the issue of disposal of organic waste at the site, without the need for urgent (and paid) removal.

At the same time, space on the site is saved, and, if necessary, a supply of fuel for the winter is provided. A garbage machine, like many other motorized (mechanical) means, is made with your own hands from finished parts and functional units. Another area of application of wood chips is for smoking meat, fish, sausages. Chips and straw crushers require the following components:

  • frame (supporting structure with motor);
  • shaft with cutters and transmission mechanics;
  • receiving and loading compartments;
  • a protective case that prevents clogging of the engine and the entire drive as a whole.

The device weighs a lot - up to 10 kg, depending on its power, throughput. It is recommended to assemble a wood chip cutter on the basis of a two-wheel base - this will make it easy to roll the device directly to the place of work. The chip cutter works as follows.

  1. A motor that starts up when power is applied sets in motion the transmission mechanism, and with it the shaft on which the cutting consumables are installed.
  2. Having received the initial raw material (large fragments of wood, branches, tops, etc.), rotating circular knives cut them into chips and chips.
  3. The crushed raw material obtained during the operation of the device enters the unloading compartment and falls out.

The principle of operation of a wood chip cutter is similar to the work of a simple meat grinder. Only instead of the parts of the agricultural animals that were used up, fragments of plants are shredded here.

What do you need?

A gasoline or electric engine is suitable as a source of mechanical (kinetic) energy. It is with him that the creation of a crusher for obtaining chips begins. The size ("graininess") of the fraction, from which loose chips will be obtained, depends on the engine power . Engine power up to 3 kilowatts will enable the user to obtain wood chips from 5 cm fragments.

A further increase in power is not necessary - such an engine will cope with 7 … 8-cm single pieces loaded into the preliminary compartment. The more engine power, the more powerful the frame and knives will be required. An electric motor, especially a three-phase one, will require an electronic start board - or variable capacitors of 400-500 volts . The device is powered by a power multicore copper cable, calculated according to the cross-section of the conductors - for power with a margin of up to several kilowatts. Switching from the 220/380 V network is carried out by a switch or a special button.

The second component is a custom shaft to which the discs are mounted. You can, of course, grind it yourself from a piece of thick and smooth reinforcement, but this would require a turning and milling machine . Its diameter is 3 … 4 cm: this is enough to secure the rotating cutters. The disks themselves can be turned independently (from sheet steel) or ordered from a turner. Knives require high-quality tool (high-speed) steel: ordinary black steel will not work, the knives will quickly become dull, having only managed to somehow chop a few pieces of wood. The knives can be removed from a decommissioned woodworking machine.

The motor will require additional belt pulleys and shafts . You can also use gears - a ready-made mechanism assembled from a sawmill or a powerful grinder. It is also useful to secure the tensioning system for the chain or belt - like the one used on multi-speed mountain bikes, it is needed to eliminate slack. A chainsaw with a gasoline engine that cannot be repaired (spare parts for it are difficult to find, since this model has long been discontinued) can provide the user with a still suitable chain drive. It is advisable to choose the gear ratio not higher than 1: 2 and not lower than 1: 3. For the engine and other rotating assemblies, spare bearings may be required - in case the “relatives” in the finished mechanics have failed (or will soon fail).

As a sifter for fractions of chips, as for a grain crusher, a chip crusher will require a sieve with a certain mesh size (or mesh). A sheet metal with a thickness of no more than 1 mm is enough - the load of the crushed wood on the sifter is not so great that it bends after a few minutes of work. The strainer can be made from an old saucepan of the correct size. To secure the hinged part of the case, in order to service the device, hinges of the hinged type will be needed.

The toolkit, without which a chip cutter cannot be made, includes:

  • turning and milling machines;
  • grinder with a set of cutting discs for metal;
  • a welding inverter and a set of electrodes, a protective helmet with a darkened visor and gloves made of thick, coarse cloth;
  • a pair of adjustable (or a set of open-end) wrenches;
  • drill with a set of drills for metal;
  • core and hammer;
  • building ruler, tapered type, right angle (square), marker.

Having prepared the devices, materials and ready-made components, they proceed to the process of assembling a homemade wood chip grinder.

Drawings and dimensions

Having decided on the type of device, the master selects a suitable drawing or creates his own. However, understanding the mechanics and strength of materials, an experienced user will draw up a drawing already at the manufacturing stage. The finished part of the drawing will facilitate the task - for example, a drawing of an asynchronous motor, a gear-transmission mechanism and saw blades . All that remains is to select the dimensions of the frame and body. The design, containing cutting discs for wood, usually used in a grinder, has relative simplicity, but does not noticeably lose in performance to factory shredding machines. You can get a device that occupies, for example, 0.2 m3 of space and is easy to move on wheels.

Manufacturing technology

A machine for chopping wood and branches into chips can be made with your own hands on the basis of a grinder or a jointer (electric planer).

From circular saws

The basis for the work of the machine will serve as a Bulgarian drive. Follow the steps below to make such a machine.

  1. Cut off a section of the channel and reduce the height of its horizontal (longitudinal) parts.
  2. Mark the channel piece modified in this way and drill 4 identical holes for the bolts. This can be done with a drilling machine or with a drill.
  3. Place a pair of insert bearings on the formed platform, tightening them in the center with bolts. The bolts can be, for example, size M12 with a hexagon socket wrench.
  4. Weld the resulting bearing structure to a piece of sheet steel. Cut the plate, drill a hole in it and weld it to the resulting structure at a right angle.
  5. Make the shaft from a piece of thick, perfectly round pin. Put a steel washer on it and scald it.
  6. Insert this shaft into the bearings. Here the washer serves as an additional support.
  7. Slide saw blades on the shaft of the same diameter and tooth pitch. It is not recommended to use cutting wheels of different diameters with a different number of teeth. Install two additional spacer washers between adjacent discs.
  8. Cut out the second plate for the shaft. Weld it to the base.
  9. Weld the third to the top edge of the two plates. For aesthetics, grind the welded seams with a grinder.
  10. Weld the object stage to the base of the resulting structure, through which wood raw materials ready for shredding are fed.
  11. Make and weld attachments for an angle grinder (grinder).

Install and check the grinder. It should rotate a self-made mechanical drive freely, without a noticeable loss in speed. A gear-based gear mechanism is already included in the grinder's package - the second does not need to be installed in the machine itself.

From a jointer

The jointer or electric plane itself makes chips with good performance. But this planer works only with straight cuts of boards, slats left after construction and finishing, reconstruction work at the user's site. With the maximum protruding beyond the plane along which the board being planed is leveled, an industrial electric plane produces coarse sawdust. For the processing of wood and branches into chips, a device that is slightly different in design will be required. To make it, do the following.

  1. Make a wheelbase frame.
  2. Fix a motor of a suitable power (for example, asynchronous) on it.
  3. Attach to the frame well above the motor a rotating knife-plane, made in the image and likeness of the one that works in the electric plane. His knives should significantly go beyond the diameter limited by the torque shaft.
  4. Install pulleys with a gear ratio of 1: 2 or 1: 3 on the shafts of the motor and the chopping knife.
  5. Slide a belt of the correct size and thickness over the pulleys. The stiffness (force) with which it is tensioned must be sufficient to overcome the slippage effect - this, in turn, would render the engine useless.
  6. Install a square feed horn (funnel). Its internal dimensions should be commensurate with the length of the working part (chopper) of the electrofuger.

Start the finished machine and check the work. Load thin branches, gradually increasing the thickness of the next fragments fed to the shredder.

Recommendations

  • Do not exceed the recommended thickness of branches and other wood debris fed to the shredder. It is possible to estimate how thick the branches should be processed in this device, having detected a noticeable slowdown in engine operation.
  • Do not slip overdried pieces of wood with knots. If you still have to recycle them, pre-cut them into even smaller pieces. The fact is that the knot, like the nodular rhizome, has increased strength. Knots, for example, on the trunk and branches of acacia are as strong as even harder types of wood, for example, boxwood.
  • The most dangerous phenomenon is stopping, stuck rotating knives at full speed. The teeth that have broken off when getting stuck can not only adversely affect the further performance of the shredder, but also ricochet, for example, into the eye of the user. Match the power and performance of the machine to the hardness of the wood and lumber to be shredded.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use the machine for grinding composite materials, for example, MDF, metal-plastic. But the chip cutter will cope with crushing most types of plastic. Of interest here are situations when shredded plastic is used in solid fuel boilers of the pyrolysis principle of operation, which is based on the smokeless combustion of industrial organic matter, in particular, synthetic materials.
  • An attempt to put fragments of tires with steel and Kevlar cords into the shredder, as well as fragments of steel structures and non-ferrous metal, will guaranteed to damage the knives. To grind metal, cutting wheels for wood are replaced with diamond-coated saw blades. Then the user will receive a shredder for scrap metal, glass-brick broken (used in road construction), and not a crusher for making chips.
