The usual small stool is present, probably, in every home. This type of seat is indispensable in small kitchens, at bar counters or in children's rooms, and is even used in the form of stepladders. Stools, like any furniture, are made according to standard sizes that correspond to the average anthropological data of a person.

Stool device

According to the definition in the encyclopedia, a stool is a seat intended for one person, without a back and armrests, consisting of the seat itself, 3 or 4 legs, and possibly also with crossbars under the seat and between the legs (with drawers and legs). Such chairs are made of wood, metal, plastic, plywood and, depending on the purpose and model , sometimes they use foam rubber or some other seal, artificial and natural leather, fur or fabric for the seat.

What is the height according to GOST?

According to the state standard, the dimensions of a traditional stool are as follows: the side of the seat is at least 30-32 cm, the height from the floor to the surface of the seat is 42-48 cm. At the same time, the table at which they sit on the stool is also of a standard height - 72-78 cm.

But tables can be higher, for example, bar counters, their height ranges from 85 to 130 cm … In these cases, the stools must be selected in such a way that the difference in the height of the table and stool is approximately 35-40 cm.

If the height of the table is, for example, 90 cm, then the stool should be about 55 cm, with a table height of about 1 m, the height of the chair, respectively, is about 60 cm.

It is important to note that if the stool is more than 50 cm high, the legs should be fitted with foot bars , moreover, the distance from the crossbar to the stool seat should correspond to the standard chair height of 42-48 cm.

There are standards for children:

  • with the growth of a child up to 1, 16 m, the height of the table is 46, and the stools are 26 cm;

  • with a height of 1, 20 m - respectively 53 and 31 cm;
  • with a height of 1, 40 m - table 59, chair 35 cm;
  • with an increase of 1, 50 m - 64 and 38.

Height selection rules

The standard sizes of stools are designed for an average person's height of 1.65 m. Such sizes are clearly not suitable for tall people and children. There is a single formula by which you can calculate the required stool height for an individual:

(P * 75/165) - 35

where P is the individual height of a person in centimeters, 75 is the standard table height, 165 is the average person's height in centimeters, 35 is the difference between the height of the table and the stool.

But for a family with several people, including children, this formula needs to be slightly changed.

Instead of the standard average of 165, the arithmetic average of the height values of all family members is taken.

If all these calculations are tedious and complex, then there are some tips for choosing:

  • when a person sits on a stool, his feet should be free to stand on the floor, and his knees should be bent exactly at an angle of 90 degrees;
  • the distance between the knees and the tabletop should be about 10-15 cm;
  • the front edge of the stool should not press on the lower thigh under the knees.
