The purpose of the reinforcing mesh is to strengthen and protect. If you forget to lay this layer, disrupting the technological chain, repair gaps can soon make themselves felt. Therefore, it is imperative to find time to choose a high-quality mesh, and there are plenty to choose from.

Peculiarities

The construction of building structures is associated with the provision of increased strength and stability of the object with the help of reinforcement. To reinforce the masonry, to increase the strength of the plaster layer, to strengthen the facades of the building, a reinforcing mesh is needed . She also makes floors and foundations more durable. But it is not only about better protection of the structure, the mesh also increases the adhesion of the mortars used in the finishing.

And now a little more about the logic of the reinforcement processes

  • For construction activities, the use of cement and concrete mixtures, other finishing solutions is a frequent matter. After hardening, they will be strong, but they risk cracking under the influence of deformations, various kinds of loads and other moments associated with the shrinkage of the object.
  • To increase the resistance to this and to strengthen the strength values of concrete, cement and other materials, a mesh is used for reinforcement. It is she who is responsible for the integrity of the composition after its hardening, giving it mechanical strength.

If, for example, the floors are to be poured during repairs, the screed can easily crack . But the grid will reduce this risk to almost zero probability. The mesh is also actively used as a heat insulator for foam sheets, which are quite fragile in structure. Finally, it is the reinforcing mesh that is the device that will increase the adhesion (scene) between the finishing compound and the wall surface itself.

The mesh is an excellent, well-proven bonding element that allows the cladding to firmly anchor to the surface.

If the thickness of the finishing compound is higher than 20 mm, mesh reinforcement will not disturb the integrity of the already hardened composition. It is also used for rough ceiling finishing.

It is obvious that this building product is in demand and multifunctional . It should be produced actively, offering the buyer a rich assortment for every purpose and wallet. And here comes the most interesting and crucial moment - to choose the right mesh, to find a compromise option for price and quality, which will definitely cope with its task.

All meshes can be divided into two large groups: according to the purpose and the type of material used.

By appointment

Each of the presented varieties has a narrow specialization, that is, using it for other purposes is a deliberately false path. Even if the application is guided by the principle "do not waste the good", you need to understand that the material is designed by experts in relation to certain compositions and technologies.

By design, the grids are like this

  • Masonry . For the reinforcement of brickwork, a material made of steel wire up to 5 mm thick by welding is used. The mesh acts as a reinforcing belt when a brick is laid, as well as a gas or cinder block and natural stone. The reinforcing layer is thin enough, and therefore nothing threatens the inter-row seam. Using a mesh, it is possible to carry out a high-quality bond in the masonry, which reduces the risk of a wall falling or cracking. The grid looks like a cell strip with dimensions of 50 by 50 or 100 by 100 mm (these are the parameters of one cell).
  • Staple . Concrete screed mesh is a steel welded structure. For concreting sites and floors, it is virtually indispensable. It is used for thin-layer pouring, which means that it will not work for floors between floors and the foundation. But it does an excellent job with the task of the solidity of the screed along the entire perimeter, that is, when it sags, it does not allow cracking of the screed to appear. A wire with a maximum thickness of 4 mm is used; special notches are left along the entire length of the wire, which organize better adhesion with the cement composition.
  • Plastering . There will be the most reinforcement mesh samples in this category. It is realized in one meter (in width) rolls. This type can be steel, fiberglass and polypropylene. The mesh eliminates the occurrence of cracks in the joints of dissimilar bases (for example, when aerated concrete and brickwork are adjacent). It allows you to apply plaster in a layer of 2-3 cm, even if in places the plaster peels off the ceiling or walls, the mesh will prevent further falling. It is laid on the walls in vertical stripes, observing the overlap.
  • Painting . Another category of mesh that increases the efficiency of painting work. Used to create it, polypropylene or fiberglass. The material turns out to be in demand if you need to apply a thin putty layer on a surface that is unfavorable for good adhesion. This way you can achieve better mechanical strength of the walls and reduce the risk of cracking.

With the first point, everything is clear - first, the intended use of the mesh is determined, and only then you need to look for a suitable material.

By material of manufacture

The most popular option is a metal mesh for reinforcement.

Steel mesh:

  • equips a reliable screed in the pouring of floor bases;
  • does not exfoliate the binder composition;
  • guarantees high-quality contact of the plaster with the walls, which do not have gross, significant defects;
  • increases the stability of masonry walls.

Steel mesh can be welded, expanded metal, and chain-link. The material is flexible, easy to use, with an increased strength reserve.

Steel mesh competes with plastic mesh . It is made from high-strength polymers, the polymer material can be polyurethane or polypropylene. It is not afraid of stretching, it is good in relation to breaking loads, it is not afraid of high humidity, as well as temperature jumps. This option can be considered budgetary.

A related fiberglass mesh, whose properties of use are determined by density. Such a product is sold in rolls or tapes. The material perfectly strengthens drywall joints, increases adhesion with the finishing compound and prevents cracking.

Another option is fiberglass composite mesh . It is made from intertwined roving rods, fastened together. The product can be braided and stitched. The decorative appearance of this mesh often appears in areas: not necessarily for a fence, but, for example, as a support for climbing plants. But the main purpose of use is still the interior decoration of buildings and finishing work associated with the design of the facades of buildings.

Dimensions (edit)

The size range of the mesh is large, but the most common sizes are 100x100, 50x50 mm. The size of the cells is indicated in mm. There are also options 150 by 150 mm, as well as 200 by 200. The section diameter is also measured in mm and can be from 3 to 16. We are talking about roll materials, the weight of which is also important: for example, a mesh with a cross-sectional diameter of 3 mm, a cell of 50 by 50 mm will weigh 2.08 kg.

How to choose?

Experienced builders very quickly understand which material is suitable for a particular task. Those who have only recently faced renovation may be in disarray - the mesh is sold in a rich assortment. How not to make a mistake with the choice?

These tips will help

  1. The material should be checked for tensile strength. You need to take a sample of the mesh in your hand, squeeze it - if the mesh is of high quality, it will return to its initial shape - that is, it will straighten out.
  2. For the rest, it is important to adhere to the goals for which this building product is purchased. For example, if plastering work is coming and the plaster layer does not exceed 5 mm, it is better to take a fiberglass mesh. It is noteworthy that it will also help a little to level the wall: it will not cope with large volumes, but it will level minor flaws.
  3. If the plaster layer is more than 5 mm, you will have to take something stronger, for example, a galvanized metal mesh. It makes the reinforcing layer very strong. But we are talking about a galvanized product, not steel (it is important not to confuse). If you have to finish the facade, that is, use a mesh for outdoor work, the steel option will definitely not work, because it oxidizes, rusts and will ruin everything with a high probability.
  4. If the finish is already nearing the end, and only a thin layer remains, you can take a canvas with small cells.
  5. If you have to work with drywall, the plastic mesh will do an excellent job of strengthening this material.
  6. For thermal insulation, a grid with a cell size of 50 by 50 mm, resistant to aggressive media (that is, alkali-resistant), is suitable. Also, such an unspoken rule applies to insulation: the price of the mesh should not exceed 5% of all costs for thermal insulation.

Any product must be, first of all, safe. Therefore, it is imperative to ask the seller for a certificate of conformity.

Installation tips

The instructions will have their own characteristics for laying the net indoors or outdoors. The mesh layer can be laid both vertically and horizontally. With regard to the strength of the plaster, the laying method is unimportant.

How to mount the reinforcement to the facade?

  1. It is necessary to take the dimensions of the wall, cut the mesh along them, it is easier to do this with scissors for metal.
  2. You can fix it with dowels, taking into account the suitable length of the hardware. For facades, 90 mm nails are usually used. If these are walls made of foam blocks, there should be no problems with fastening. Dowels are used on concrete or brick facades.
  3. An electric drill with a perforator drills the first hole for reinforcement - the depth of the hole is assumed to be a couple of centimeters more than the length of the plastic element (if a dowel is driven in).
  4. The holes are drilled linearly with a step of half a meter, a mesh is hung on each dowel. It must be pulled a little without looking at possible irregularities.
  5. Next, you should check the position of the row opposite, if that lay not evenly enough, the net is outweighed to adjacent cells.
  6. If all is well, you just need to continue in the same pattern, staggering the fasteners.
  7. In the areas of openings (windows and doors), the mesh is also cut in proportion to the openings. But it is permissible and just to bend it.

Plastering this facade wall, the mortar is poured in stages. At first, its mass should be thick, but in the final leveling, a more liquid composition is used.

How to fix the plastic mesh for reinforcement?

  1. You can glue it on any brand of glue, but it should give strong adhesion to plastic. Usually, in the case of a mesh, a fine adhesive layer is applied a couple of millimeters thick.
  2. First, you should inspect the tiled surface, if the tiles were attached to dowels, you need to sink their caps and seal the grooves.
  3. Draw a horizontal line on the wall along the height of the reinforcement layer. This line controls the height of the adhesive application.
  4. The glue is prepared according to the instructions on the package, first water is poured into the basin, and then the dry composition. You can interfere with it either with a trowel or with an electric drill attachment.
  5. Glue is applied to the wall with a spatula, and the longer this tool, the smoother the surface will be. Glue is applied to the spatula in the middle of it, the understanding of the required amount comes in the process of work. The layer thickness should be no more than 3 mm. It is not worth applying a lot at once, two meters in length is enough (otherwise the glue will harden before the mesh fits into the prepared place).
  6. Now you need to try on the location of the mesh, if necessary, the material is trimmed.
  7. First, one end of the mesh is glued, it is aligned horizontally to the length of the section of the wall that has already been prepared. The mesh should lie without obvious distortions, all kinds of defects.
  8. The mesh should be laid with an overlap of 10 cm. The first mesh row is glued immediately over the entire width, and in the place of the overlap too. And the second line will lie on the freshly applied glue - this makes it easier to fix the reinforcement.
  9. By hand, the mesh is pressed against the fresh glue in a number of places, and again it is necessary to adjust its position. The excess is removed.
  10. With a spatula, the mesh is pressed against the surface. The glue of the first layer should protrude everywhere, swallowing the facial cells. If areas with insufficient adhesive impregnation are found, the adhesive can be applied over the reinforcement.
  11. It remains to let the glue dry. It is better to give him the night to carry out the finishing grout in the morning.

Reinforcing mesh is a full-fledged participant in the repair and construction process, helping to increase the rigidity and strength of the structure, and prevent the appearance of cracks . This material is used in external and internal works, it assumes a large selection and clear instructions for installation, which even a non-professional can handle.

Thanks to the reinforcing mesh, the structure, after the applied building composition has hardened, will become a monolithic structure, the integrity of which will be flawless.
