The original idea of growing tomatoes was proposed by the scientist Igor Maslov about four decades ago. He proposed a fundamentally new method of planting tomatoes, which many farms and ordinary summer residents began to use. Over the years, the technique has been tested in many climatic zones, and everywhere the tomato has invariably demonstrated high yields.

Features of the method

When creating a new method of cultivating tomatoes, Igor Maslov proceeded from the fact that tomato bushes are naturally creeping plants . They are not adapted for vertical cultivation. For comparison, cucumbers have special long tendrils with which it clings to the supports. Tomatoes do not have the corresponding adaptations, because the vertical type of growth is quite laborious for them.

The root system of tomatoes is very weak, meanwhile it is it that directly affects the fruiting of the crop. There are small pimples all over the stem of the tomato bush - these are the rudiments of the roots.

If the shoot gets the opportunity to sprout roots along the length of the green stem, then this will increase the volume of the root system as a whole several times. Accordingly, the fruits will receive more useful micro and macro elements, and the yield will be higher.

As a result of these observations, Maslov suggested planting seedlings in the ground not in a vertical, but in a horizontal direction. In addition, the scientist found that it is advisable to slightly overexpose the seedlings so that they have time to grow more and be able to get stronger. The larger the stem part of the tomato bush, the better its rhizomes will be formed.

It is noteworthy that this technique excludes pinching of plants - the removal of lateral shoots that grow under the lowest leaves . The scientist believed that these manipulations weaken the stems and thereby reduce the quantity and quality of the crop. He suggested using these branches to grow new additional shrubs. To do this, they are thoroughly cleaned of foliage, pressed to the soil, pinned and sprinkled with a substrate for 8-10 cm.

After some time, young leaves appear in the deepening area. And after 3-4 weeks they form a new full-fledged bush, thus increasing the overall yield of tomatoes.

That's why seedlings should be planted at a distance of at least 1 m from each other . With this scheme, tomatoes will have enough free space for full growth and development. In other words, Maslov's technique helps gardeners to achieve savings on planting material, which in the course of growth will itself multiply several times due to the cultivation of the shoots.

Maslov's method has its obvious advantages:

  • increasing the yield of each bush by 3-4 times;
  • the technique does not require any additional costs;
  • saving the number of seedlings and sown area;
  • simplicity and accessibility for every vegetable grower.

However, there are also costs:

  • planting tomato seedlings on a horizontal plane will require a lot of space on the plantation;
  • fruits grow too close to the soil, if not harvested on time, it will be affected by fungal infections or terrestrial insects.

Suitable varieties

Most agricultural technicians advise taking only tall varieties for cultivating tomatoes using the Maslov technique. This solution justifies itself in small gardens. However, when planting undersized varieties, there is a high probability of a shortage of harvest per square meter, it can be 60-70%.

Several varieties are considered optimal for growing according to the Maslov method

" Giant Maslova "- a high-yielding mid-season variety, ripening occurs in the period from 110 to 130 days from the moment of germination of seedlings. Fruits are juicy, fleshy, large, weighing up to 600 g. Bushes of this variety can reach 2 m in length, when grown in a vertical plane, a small trellis is usually used.

The roots of this plant are strong and powerful. Therefore, the plant requires fertile land. The largest harvest can be harvested on black soil with humus. At the initial stage of growth, the crop requires beneficial fertilizers.

" Pink giant "- salad variety with a medium early ripening period. Its main advantage lies in the small volume of seeds or their absence. The fruits are fleshy, round, weighing about 400-500 g. They have a good taste, when cut, they practically do not emit juice. The height of the bush is 1.5 m.

" Giant "- a tall variety with an average ripening period. Grows up to 1, 8 m. On each shoot, up to 7-9 brushes are formed, strewn with fruits. Tomatoes are distinguished by high taste characteristics, suitable for fresh consumption, as well as processing into ketchup and pasta.

" Russian giant " - the main advantage of this variety of tomatoes is its massive fruits, reaching 650 g. They are distinguished by resistance to cracking and good taste. This mid-season variety grows up to 1.7 m.

It is characterized by resistance to fungal diseases.

How do I prepare the seeds?

When preparing seedlings for growing seedlings, one should take into account the length of summer in a particular climatic zone .… If the warm season does not last long, then the seeds should be prepared even in winter, so that over the summer the tomatoes have time to grow and reach technical ripeness. According to Maslov's theory, about 80-90 days pass from the time of planting the seeds to the beginning of fruiting.

The technique requires the most scrupulous selection of seed material … Only the best tomatoes are suitable for this. It is advisable to germinate as many shoots as possible in order to choose the strongest plants from them. However, even in this case, one must prepare for the fact that the yield on different bushes will differ. But in any case, it will far exceed the number of tomatoes harvested using the traditional method.

Landing

The technology of planting young seedlings using the Maslov technique is almost the same as any other methods of planting tomato bushes … However, here you should not rush to plant the plant in open ground. It should grow larger than usual.

When planting seedlings, it is necessary to clean the garden from last year's foliage and plant debris, form a groove and moisten it with a large volume of water. In this case, the seedlings should be placed so that most of the stem is immersed in the ground. In this case, the root of the tomato bush should be directed to the south. In this case, the tip facing north will begin to stretch in the opposite direction during growth.

Sprinkle seedlings with soil mixture so that the substrate layer is 9-10 cm, only 4-5 upper leaves should be above the ground

In regions with a short summer duration, as well as in areas with an unstable climate, the beds with tomatoes must be insulated after planting. To do this, you can organize a film greenhouse or lay out straw.

Picking

Igor Maslov stated that growing tomatoes according to his technique does not need a special pick . Nevertheless, experienced gardeners have noticed that the plant responds very well to this procedure - after it, the seedlings actively grow roots and grow stronger very quickly. Therefore, today, many experts advise diving tomatoes grown according to Maslov. During the growth of the bush, it is advisable to perform at least 3 picks, this will allow the culture to form a strong root system . For this, all the lower leaves are cut off, deepening the stem more and more.

Care

Caring for bushes of tomatoes grown according to the Maslov technique is almost the same as the agricultural technique of any other garden crop. It also requires watering, weeding, fertilization and tying.

Fertilizers

If humus or manure was added to the holes when planting seedlings, this will be enough for the full development of tomato bushes and the formation of fruits. If this has not been done, as well as when cultivated on scarce soils, the plant will need additional feeding. The very first fertilizers are applied a couple of days after planting young plants. To do this, use a mullein solution (1 in 10) or bird droppings (1 in 20).

In the future, 1 time in 10 days, seedlings are fed with ready-made complex mineral compositions.

Tying

Special attention should be paid to the garter of tomato bushes. Plants grown by Maslov's method produce a lot of fruits, under their weight, branches can break. To avoid this, a wire, rope or fishing line is stretched along the bed and the stems and bunches are carefully tied to it. It is advisable to use a wide bandage for this; a rubber band, gauze or any other materials that do not injure the bush are also suitable.

Watering

Growing tomato beds require regular watering . However, it should be remembered that the plant develops horizontally in close contact with the ground. Therefore, it is important not to create excessive moisture, otherwise the decay process cannot be avoided.

The most widespread among gardeners was the arched irrigation technique. In this case, at a short distance from the tomato bushes, grooves are formed in the aisles, water is released through them from time to time.

This method prevents the formation of puddles near the tomatoes and prevents the soil around the bushes from becoming covered with a hard crust. In this case, the amount of moisture should be moderate.

It should be noted that experienced gardeners at first reacted with some distrust to the new method of growing tomato crops recommended by Maslov … However, some took a risk to try it in their summer cottages, and were very pleased, since the yield of each bush increased almost 3 times. This method of cultivating vegetables requires early sowing of the seed. Subsequently, this will help the plants take root more quickly when moved into open ground and begin to bear fruit earlier.

For a while, the technique was undeservedly forgotten, but nowadays it is remembered again. Experts say that it allows the plant to develop powerful roots and provide growing fruits with a full range of nutrients. The method provides an increase in yield, while the basic methods of planting and caring for the plant are practically no different from standard agricultural techniques.
