Among all gourmet products, perhaps the most capricious are tobacco products. Anyone who enjoys smoking good cigars or cigarillos knows how different cigars tasted on site are from those that have been stored in a desk drawer for a couple of months. To avoid such changes and keep the product in its original form, special cabinets for cigarettes, also called humidor cabinets, were invented.
What it is?
A humidor is a special wooden box for storing cigarettes. It is made from porous wood, such as cedar, which absorbs moisture and then gradually releases it into the atmosphere, maintaining a constant level of humidity around. A properly made cigar cabinet is airtight and has tight-fitting sides and a lid.
It is better if it is also made of wood .however, there are also glass options. Then, so that the cigars are not exposed to direct sunlight, the window can be closed with a curtain. The humidor ensures the correct storage of tobacco products in the ideal temperature and humidity conditions.
Since cigars come from Cuba, where the climate is not at all European, they suffer greatly from our weather conditions. For example, the most optimal humidity level for them is about 70%.
In the European climate, however, this figure in rooms rarely exceeds 30-40%. This is fraught with drying out of the tobacco leaves that make up the cigar. They become brittle and lose their aromatic properties.
When smoked, dry tobacco burns much faster and emits more pungent fumes, which significantly affects the taste.
In addition, they are afraid of both low and extremely high temperatures. Therefore, they cannot be stored in the refrigerator. The preferred temperature is 20-25 degrees. Another reason why a household refrigerator is not suitable for storing them is that cigar sheets easily absorb foreign odors. Wood for humidors is selected as neutral as possible so that they do not absorb unnecessary odors.
If you store cigars in too humid rooms, they can become damp and rot, and mold can appear on them.
It is sad if such expensive and fragrant products disappear due to improper storage.
Benefits and working principle
However, a humidor helps to avoid all these problems. As already mentioned, it is made from wood species that do not endow it with additional odors and protect it from the environment. Using a hygrostat and humidifier, the device maintains a constant level of humidity and temperature inside the box, ensuring the best storage conditions.
In such a cabinet, cigars are protected from all harmful influences and can be stored for years. This applies, for example, to collectible items. Glass-lid cabinets are acceptable for constantly renewing line-ups in the collection so that cigars don't get stuck in them.
This humidor cabinet is now mandatory in specialized stores, as well as in private collectors. They come in both very large and very small, fit on the desktop, making them convenient for novice smokers or those who are not addicted to cigars themselves, but share them with friends and clients. Even small cigarette cabinets have all the necessary technical characteristics to maintain a healthy microclimate inside the box.
They do this thanks to a special moisturizing mechanism. The hygrostat measures the humidity level inside the cabinet and displays it on a scale. Humidifying cassettes gradually evaporate moisture into the atmosphere, maintaining it at the proper level. Modern humidors use a variety of humidification mechanisms , but the principle of their action is approximately the same.
The original cigarette cabinet was a tight-fitting wooden box with a container of water in a corner. The water evaporated into the atmosphere, humidifying the room. Of course, it had to be topped up all the time and the humidor had to be carefully monitored. Then the hygrostat began to cope with this function. A little later, the damp cloth at the bottom of the box began to replace the vessel, especially in small humidors.
Modern wardrobes are not much different from this principle. Special cassettes built into the drawer are moist and release moisture. Their condition also needs to be monitored and periodically added with water or a 50% propylene glycol solution. It is recommended to do this once every 1-2 weeks in the case of water or once a month with a solution.
It should be noted that only distilled water can be poured into the cassettes. Sold in pharmacies and tobacco shops, it is odorless, bacteria and debris free, so it won't ruin your humidor.

Since the correct humidification mechanism is the most important thing in a humidor, you need to know that there are several basic types of cassettes:
- The most common and time-tested is sponge , which is soaked in water or solution and placed inside the box. This is not the most reliable option, since it requires constant monitoring of the moisture level and adding water. Much depends on the manufacturer and the quality of the sponge.
- Special acrylic foam able to absorb much more moisture and give it away more evenly. Therefore, this method is more innovative. Unfortunately, both the foam and the sponge harden over time and no longer absorb moisture. Therefore, they need to be changed about once a year.
- Electronic humidifier is just beginning to gain popularity in the market. They consist of a hygrostat and a fan and operate on the mains supply. When the humidity level drops, a special sensor is triggered, air is sucked into the fan and driven through a special water tank. Thus, it is enriched with moisture. The main advantage of such a system is efficiency: an automatic hygrostat will not allow cigars to dry out.
