Traditionally, for our country, in apartment buildings, the kitchen is organized according to the principle of placing all the main units (for example, stoves and sinks) along one wall. As a rule, such a wall is still supplemented with a countertop or a refrigerator, but the fact remains that there is only one main working wall, and all other parts of the room are left to the owner's imagination. However, modern designers have long abandoned such an idea as axioms - today they are proposing to an increasing number of customers to equip a corner kitchen, which is no worse in terms of practicality, but still looks very fresh and unusual in design.

In order to avoid misunderstandings, it is worth immediately clarifying that a corner kitchen means the location of a kitchen set along two adjacent walls. At the same time, it does not necessarily have to occupy their entire length - the main thing is that it covers the very corner in which these walls meet.

At the same time, the corner set is not the only conditionally atypical option for the arrangement of kitchen furniture, and it itself can be subdivided into more specific varieties - for example, with or without an island.

A corner set usually assumes a small kitchen size (up to 10 square meters) or the design of a kitchen corner in a studio apartment without interior partitions, therefore it is tailored for small sizes. It is assumed that the length of each of the wings should usually not exceed two meters . - this allows, with a small area, not only to save space, but also to freely reach any nodes and parts of the headset without unnecessary movements. Therefore, one should not be surprised that the standard dimensions of such products are usually relatively small - for example, 2000x1600, 2000x2000, 2800x1600x2200 mm. At the same time, in a not very cramped kitchen, such a solution leaves a lot of space for separating the working area from the dining area.

At the same time, even two meters in length for each wing is quite a lot, and a significant part of our compatriots should think about further reducing the kitchen area. The corner set seems to be reduced in a rather large room, since it does not occupy the entire wall, but, as it were, squeezes in the corner , however, in actual area, it is usually still slightly larger than its linear counterpart due to the part in the corner itself, the use of which is usually very conditional due to the fact that it is difficult to get there. Such a solution is also inappropriate in the conditions of highly elongated kitchens, since there the location in any of the corners very much clutters up at least half of the room and overloads it.

In the same way, it is undesirable to use a corner set in a too large square-shaped kitchen - there it will seem somehow frivolous, therefore it is better to place all the main nodes along one of the walls.

How to calculate correctly?

In the process of making to order or buying a kitchen set, the most difficult thing is the correct size calculation. The new acquisition is designed to last for many years, therefore it is unacceptable for it to be inconvenient or uncomfortable. At the same time, it is not easy for a beginner to calculate all the points due to the complex shape of the structure.

The first parameter to be determined is the length of the wings of the corner set . At first glance, it is determined quite simply: you need to take into account the length of all the units included in its composition, including the stove, sink, the same refrigerator, and put them together. At the same time, dividing the total length into two wings, one must not forget that the corner will be occupied by one of these wings, therefore the length count for the second wing must be started not from the corner, but from the end of the headset along the second wall.

The number of lockers, at first glance, may be arbitrary, but it should be remembered that, for ease of use, the length of the wings should still not exceed two meters. In addition, a rather modest footage of the room can also force the length of the wings to be reduced, however, as compensation, you should intensively use the upper tier, where you can also hang cabinets.

If you live in an apartment alone and very rarely receive guests, then at the same time you can include a special countertop in the length of the planned corner kitchen, which will replace a full table. If there are more inhabitants or the dwelling is used to receiving guests, you can slightly improve the shape of the corner set by adding a protrusion to it that turns the corner into a U-shaped table … Most often, a small bar counter is used for this, but if the corner is equipped on a grand scale, you can put a real table there too - if only the lack of space between it and the headset does not prevent the hostess from managing the preparation and serving of food.

An alternative option for how to fit the table into a corner set is to add an "island" in the form of a table - it is located in such a way as to occupy the opposite corner of an imaginary rectangle, two of the sides of which are formed by a corner kitchen. Both options are good in that the serving of dishes on the table is extremely simplified - the latter is literally a meter from the cooking zone, but it is important not to forget about maintaining enough space to move inside the kitchen area.

Another global parameter is the depth of the corner kitchen . Much depends on the height of the people who will use the room, but in general, corner sets are usually made a little narrower. This is due to the fact that we have a corner, which is more difficult to get to than to either of the two walls, and therefore the furniture along the two walls must remain narrow. If the arrangement is also carried out according to the U-shaped principle or with an "island", then the depth of all furniture should be even smaller, otherwise there will simply be nowhere to turn around inside, because the maximum dimensions of the kitchen area, according to the above, are two by two meters. For this reason, a depth of 50-60 cm seems to be optimal; it can only be slightly increased if additional bar counters and separate tables are not included in the layout.

With height, the situation is most simple. The total height of the kitchen corner is usually the distance from floor to ceiling, perhaps minus a few centimeters - these figures can be found in the technical documentation for the apartment or measured independently, vertically along the corner. The optimal height for the bottom of the headset is about waist-high or slightly higher for those people who will use it. It is advisable to select built-in appliances of approximately the same height in order to avoid level differences between adjacent worktops, however, the appearance on the market of hobs separately from ovens today allows you to select the height of a kitchen set almost to a millimeter.

As for the upper part in the form of cabinets, it usually starts at a height of about 50-70 cm from the upper edge of the lower part . The lower such cabinets are located, the shallower they usually have - this is the only way to avoid inconvenience when working in the kitchen area and the danger of constantly hitting your head against the doors.

At the same time, you should not hang cabinets too high - at least to the lower shelves, the owners of the apartment should confidently reach, without standing on tiptoes and without getting up on a stool.

How to choose for a specific room?

Although the corner kitchen options are supposedly designed for small spaces, it should be understood that they are still generally larger than their linear "relatives", so 2-3 square meters for them is far from the limit of the occupied area, but in general such a structure can easily occupy 4 or even 5 square meters. m. In practice, this means that a standard-sized corner set can be placed in a kitchen, whose area is at least 7-8 sq. m … Only in such conditions, when drawing up a plan, it is possible to consider various options involving the installation of sloped furniture or the complete absence of upper cabinets due to their abundant arrangement at the bottom.

If the room is even larger - at least 11-12 sq. m, it is worth adding a peninsula in the form of a bar to the layout plan . On the one hand, it will clearly separate the work area from the rest of the space, on the other hand, if you need a light snack, it may well replace a full-fledged table, eliminating the feeling of not filling a too large tabletop. Again, the bar itself does not have to have an unoccupied space under it - you can also build cabinets into it, and in recent years it has become more and more fashionable to integrate a separate wine refrigerator into it, which further enhances the resemblance to a real bar.

In a fairly large kitchen with an area of 13-14 sq. m or a studio apartment devoid of interior partitions, an "island" in the form of a full-fledged table would be very appropriate . Not only does it balance the angular arrangement of the main headset in a fairly large room, but it can also represent a kind of transition zone between the kitchen and the living room. The island arrangement has its advantages, because even at a relatively small table you can sit on all sides, while in cramped kitchens this piece of furniture is often pushed against the wall, making it even more inconvenient for a large number of people to use it.

In the case of the presence of an "island", the main rule is its slightly increased area in comparison with the same "peninsula". The very fact of the presence of island furniture already indicates that there is enough space in the room, so you should not try to save it after that, since it has already been decided to emphasize this fact. As in the case of the peninsular bar counter, the countertop in the middle of the room can be effectively used to store various utensils or even products inside it, in addition, it usually effectively copes with the role of a dining table, which also helps to preserve usable space.

At the same time, it is very important to correctly calculate the dimensions of the island - it should be large enough to accommodate all household members or frequent guests, and at the same time not too bulky so as not to clutter up the working area. It is always located not far from the corner kitchen in order to maximize the simplification of serving dishes.
