Catharanthus is one of the evergreens of exotic origin. In nature, it develops in a multiyear regime. But in our country, you can only grow it as an annual. The graceful flower is believed to have originated from Madagascar. Botanists attribute it to the Kutrovy family and distinguish 8 species, however, many varieties have been bred on this basis.

Katarantus is better known under a different name: periwinkle . On its basis, drugs are made that successfully suppress malignant neoplasms. In landscape design, this plant is used in the same way as other crops intended for open ground. Catharanthus can overwinter even in the almost complete absence of snow. Traditionally, there are a lot of legends around them, and some of these legends are very ominous. So, it was assumed that with the help of catharanthus you can:

• expose the evil magicians;
• protect yourself from evil spirits;
• prevent a lightning strike to the house;
• guess.

The unusual legends surrounding the periwinkle are associated with its impressive properties. The plant can use water as efficiently as possible. Very little moisture evaporates through the miniature stomata of the foliage, so the catharanthus is unusually tenacious. Its flowers appear even in the most difficult conditions, and the plant itself is able to survive freezing rain.

Cultivation basics

Growing a catharanthus gives equally good results in a pot, and in a flower bed, and in a container. The seeds of the plant are not too capricious. They are distinguished by friendly shoots and allow you to form excellent seedlings. Many varieties are undemanding to watering and can be grown in moderately moist soil.

Important: every part of the catharanthus is toxic. Therefore, placing it in the house or on the street must be very thoughtful so that small children or pets do not get to the plant. All work with catharanthus should be carried out only in durable gloves or mittens.

Even in the warmest regions of Russia, it is impossible to collect seeds: they cannot mature in the open field. The exception is greenhouse culture.
